The language behind public markets

Trade Lyceum publishes short, independent notes on how prices, reports, and public data are described. The aim is clearer reading — not a method for picking outcomes.

Education describes mechanisms. It does not choose a holding.

The studio

A reading room for market vocabulary

Trade Lyceum is an independent editorial studio in Ottawa. We write for people who want clearer language around money and public markets: students, career-changers, and curious readers. We do not enrol cohorts, issue certificates, or manage accounts.

Notes stay free. The desk is funded by advertising and by publishing educational content, described in the FAQ and legal pages. Editorial choices are not sold as placement.

For
Readers building language, not a client book.
From
Ottawa, Canada — independent of brokers, exchanges, and product desks.
Limit
We explain how things are named. We do not tell you what to buy.

Structure

What an order book is describing

Visible bids and offers as a published queue — useful language for reading a screen, not a cue to take a side.

  • Instruments

A share as a residual claim, in one page

How textbooks define equity after other claims — a definition, not a ranking of companies.

  • Data

How a statistical release is titled

Why the name of a series matters as much as the printed number when you read a public table.

  • Limits

Inflation as a price index, not a mood

Basket, base period, and revision — the arithmetic behind a headline, without a forecast.

Why us

Four principles we write by

  • 01

    Plain first

A term is defined before it is reused. Style is a tool for sense, not a costume.

  • 02

    Public sources

We point to official series, reports, and academic writing — not unnamed “street talk”.

  • 03

    Distance

No signals, no favoured platforms, no commission for mentioning a product.

  • 04

    Limits

Education describes mechanisms. It does not choose a holding or promise a path.

If a sentence named something you had only heard, stay with the notes. If a line is unclear, write — questions shape what we publish next.

Library

Where lines are checked

  • A
    Official reports

Policy notes and statistical releases used to show how a figure is defined. Not a partnership.

  • B
    Open data

National accounts and price series, cited when a note needs a measured number.

  • C
    Academic literature

Peer-reviewed work on measurement and household finance, as background only.
